Agnes’ Story
Agnes [10 years old] lives with her
· grandmother Suzana (54)
· great grandmother Katarina (74) and
· her three year old sister.
They live in a remote area 30 mins walk from the nearest village. They have a field but water is far away. Agnes’ father abandoned the family 18 months ago and now Agnes is the sole carer for the family. Agnes speaks no Kiswahili and has never been to school. None of the family can read or write.
Familia Moja devised a plan which involves the people from the local church and others who help collect water and store it for several days. The family have been given a water filter, several buckets and some clothes.
FM has paid for a hired labourer and provided seeds so their land will now produce more food. The older women have been encouraged to do more so that Agnes’s workload is less and she can go to school. Familia Moja paid the £15 needed for a uniform and books for her year at school. She now speaks a little Kiswahili and Ruth said she nearly smiled the other day.
